Blueberries in Colorado
Planting in the Ground (Please only plant on the north or east side of the house or yard)
- Our native soil is horrible for them and they really don’t like our afternoon sun.
- Dig a trench to allow at 2.2 or 3.8 Sphagnum Peat Moss bale.
- You should just place the bale in the ground and make sure you punch 6-10 holes in the bottom of the bale.
- Place the bale in the hole and cut and X into the top of the bale and peel back the flaps you just made.
- Place the plants directly into the bale.
- Replace the X flaps to conserve moisture.
- Check the pH, when the pH rises above 4 use and acidic fertilizer to a bucket of water.
- Creating acidified water Add 1/2 cup of white vinegar to the buckets in increments until the pH is 4.
- Water the bale when the pH raises above 4.
- Protect the blueberries with burlap in the fall from winds when things go dormant.
