Blueberries in Colorado

Planting in the Ground  (Please only plant on the north or east side of the house or yard)

  1. Our native soil is horrible for them and they really don’t like our afternoon sun.
  2. Dig a trench to allow at 2.2 or 3.8 Sphagnum Peat Moss bale.
  3. You should just place the bale in the ground and make sure you punch 6-10 holes in the bottom of the bale.
  4. Place the bale in the hole and cut and X into the top of the bale and peel back the flaps you just made.
  5. Place the plants directly into the bale.
  6. Replace the X flaps to conserve moisture.
  7. Check the pH, when the pH rises above 4 use and acidic fertilizer to a bucket of water.
    1. Creating acidified water Add 1/2 cup of white vinegar to the buckets in increments until the pH is 4.
  8. Water the bale when the pH raises above 4.
  9. Protect the blueberries with burlap in the fall from winds when things go dormant.
